Dianne Thompson
Former Chief Executive Officer of Camelot Group – Operator of the UK National Lottery
Country: UNITED KINGDOM |
For me the key to success in the lottery industry is innovation, innovation, innovation – the one thing you cannot afford to do in this business is stand still.
When I first joined Camelot the then Chief Executive showed me a graph which demonstrated very clearly the fate of nearly all major lotteries in the world – after an initial period of very high sales the trend was always downward. To reverse that trend – and to increase our returns to Good Causes – it was clear to me that we needed to develop a strategy to deliver long-term, sustainable sales growth in a socially responsible way. We needed to attract lapsed and infrequent players while also appealing to new players. Diversification was the key – broadening the portfolio of games; and extending the reach of the lottery via new distribution channels. New games included Daily Play, Lotto HotPicks and EuroMillions – the latter linking 10 lotteries in 9 countries to create a mega-jackpot game which has now produced Europe’s biggest-ever jackpot - £125 million! And the innovation hasn’t stopped there – we’ve just launched Dream Number, our first ever draw-based game designated for raising funds for a specific cause – the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. Innovation has also been the key to increasing distribution channels. Camelot launched interactive services in 2003 and we now run the world’s most successful interactive lottery via the internet, interactive digital TV and on cell phones. We have more than 2.7 million registered players, ticket sales are £5m a week and we raise more than £1.25m for Good Causes every week. National Lottery Fast Pay – a true worldwide first – also allows lottery tickets to be bought at supermarket checkouts with other groceries. Sales of the UK National Lottery have grown by 7.4% (£336.9 million) over the last four years. We have now raised more than £20 billion for Good Causes. And all this is due to innovation – the lifeblood of our, and I would argue, every lottery. |
